When it comes to promoting your business, you are not the hero of your story.
The second area of the Donald Miller Storybrand book that goes against the most common thought regarding marketing your business is that when writing the copy you would use to promote your business, you should not be the story’s hero.
Within the Storybrand Framework, you are not the hero of the story. Your customer is the hero. You are the Guide. Or, think of it this way.
You are Yoda, not Luke Skywalker.
Remember that constant need we all have to survive? The potential customers you are trying to reach with your marketing are living within their own story in search of survival for their own life. And when it comes to their story, there is only room for one hero, and you ain’t it.
Your customer is only concerned about their own survival.
So, knowing this, when you are writing copy intending to win that person over into becoming a paying customer, you should be communicating with them by talking about their story and their journey. You can then introduce yourself and your business into their story as the guide they can trust. You are the one who can lead them to success and eventually overcome whatever obstacle is before them, allowing them to survive, and even more importantly, thrive. Then, and only then, they will listen to you.
As you can imagine, this realization can have a profound impact on how you communicate your business and what you do when developing your marketing collateral.
