What is SEO?
Three questions you might have about SEO –
1. What is SEO?
2. Why do I need to think about SEO?
3. If I make the investment, how is SEO going to help me grow my business?
For the purpose of this blog post, we’re really just going to focus on the first question regarding SEO.
Question: What is SEO?
If you talk to most people, you might think that SEO stands for SOMETIMES EXTREMELY OVERWHELMING! But it actually is short for Search Engine Optimization.
A simple explanation of SEO is basically taking the needed steps to assure that your website is being found and indexed by the search engines that your customers use to search for businesses like yours.
So when your potential customers go to Google to search for whatever it is you do, your ultimate goal is for your business website to appear as close to the top of the first search page as possible.
This is important because studies have shown that the average user doesn’t search much farther than the 3rd page.
To make this happen, search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo, have set criteria that they are searching for when locating websites to display to their customers, and the websites that rank higher in the required criteria show higher in the search results. So this means if your website has been optimized, and is hitting all the checkboxes that Google is searching for, your website will then display towards the top of your potential customers’ search results.
Remember search engines such as Google are a business as well and they are searching for the best websites that will have the most to offer their clients. If Google listed all of the websites that are out there, good and bad, eventually this would have a negative effect on their customers’ experience when using Google. So, they are searching for the best websites available. Websites that have a lot to offer their customers.
To make this happen, search engines review two sets of criteria when looking at your website –
- On-Site Optimization,
- and Off-Site Optimization.
On-Site Optimization – This is a list of set criteria that your website must contain to become visible to the search engines. Some of it is technical such as a site index and robots.txt files that your website must have to be indexed. But another side of your on-site optimization is how your site is structured, is it easy to read, easy to navigate, are you using meta-tags, are you using them correctly. If each of these things get checked, it improves your overall SEO score and this allows your site to rank higher.
Off-Site Optimization – Because the internet is truly a web of websites, the more you link to other content that is similar to yours and will help the search engines customers the most helps you gain a higher value for their results. This is ranked by websites that you refer people to, as well as other websites that send people to you. This is referred to as “backlinks.”
Next up, I’ll explain more about question #2.
