Writing copy that sells for your own business can be challenging.
Knowing exactly what to say to promote a business can be challenging, but why does it seem that writing copy that sells becomes greater when it’s your own business and your own message you trying to craft?
I propose it’s because of the investment you’ve already made to get your business where it is today.
Your Message And Outdated Furniture.
Have you ever gone into the home of an older person and walking into their living room is like stepping into a time-machine? Or maybe it’s even your own home. Do you have a piece of furniture that is outdated, but you just can’t seem to part with it?
When my wife and I were first married, the only furniture I had was my mattress and box springs, and an old wooden bedroom side table that we actually used as an “entertainment center” to hold an even older 13” Black and White TV my mom gave us for our apartment. That’s it.
But over the years, we worked and saved, and bought on credit (bad choice) to eventually furnish our apartment with both living room and bedroom furniture. Years later, we’ve been married over 27 years now, we eventually decided it was time to get rid of our existing furniture because it was outdated, or worn or just didn’t fit us anymore, but when it actually came time to take it out, we struggled. (In fact, as I write this blog post now, our old sofa and lazy boy are sitting in storage downstairs in our basement.)
Why is it so hard to let go?
I propose it’s because you know the investment that was made, in both time and money, to get what you have or where you’re at today. You know the work that was involved. You know the time that was involved. And you know the price that was paid.
I believe this same principle is what makes it so difficult when trying to craft your own marketing message for your own business. It’s this reason that causes our message to become convoluted, and cluttered, and confusing.
